In September, the Rochester City School District contacted Ms Maggie Harris, Director/Deaconess at Community Lutheran Ministry, Inc. to ask if she could provide an after-school program for up to 40 children. For those of you who know Ms. Maggie, you know what her answer was —- a resounding YES!
So our program has grown from 12 students to 28 children (mostly 3rd graders). They are accompanied from their school by CLM staff; and for an hour and half do homework, receive tutoring if needed and have a meal; after which they return to school to catch a bus to go home. The children take turns in leading the prayer and serving the meals. This has been a great experience for both the staff and children. Eight of the students have signed up for the African Drumming instruction at Reformation Lutheran Church (sponsored by Loop Ministries). Two afternoons a week they leave school an hour earlier than normal. The logistics of this arrangement sounds complicated to us adults, but the children understand it and really look forward to drumming days. How can you help? The food is privately donated and contributions are welcomed.
