Community Lutheran Ministry (CLM) is an urban outreach ministry which serves the 14621 zip code area in northeast Rochester, NY. This area of Rochester has the highest rates of hunger, poverty, unemployment and school dropout rates in the Greater Rochester Area. Further, it has a great number of single parents, drug users and abusers, youth problems, slum landlords and children hanging out on the streets than any other neighborhoods or sections in the Rochester area. Low-income, disadvantaged families in our community are confronted with many crises due to these conditions which are worsened by cuts in state and local government funding. Parents in crisis struggle with the ability to provide the nurturing their children need. Home environments are therefore not conducive to learning or to knowing God and His saving grace in Jesus Christ. Provisions for children after school and during the summer are lacking and do not ensure that they will not be subject to the negative forces of street life. Community Lutheran Ministry, Inc. provides hope to children and families through a Community Center located at 942 Joseph Avenue. Deaconess Maggie Harris provides an important constant presence of Christian values and caring for this community. This Community Center not only provides a drug-free, safe environment, but it gives these precious children of God a much needed alternative where healthy, supportive, loving relationships can be developed and resources for families can be found.
